Sookmyung President Moon Si-yeun visited Silicon Valley, the mecca of global high-tech, and spent meaningful time meeting with alumni working at the forefront of innovation. This time, a gathering was also arranged to commemorate the first start of the Sookmyung Alumni Association in Silicon Valley, which became an important opportunity to foster global talent and strengthen Sookmyung's global networks.
President Moon and the delegation attended the inauguration ceremony of the Sookmyung Young Leaders Alumni Association meeting held in Palo Alto, CA on Sat, Feb. 8. Attendees included sixteen alumni working at world-renowned companies, such as Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Zoom, Samsung SDS, and VMware.
At the first meeting, alumnus Kim Yun-jeong (Dept. of Political Science and Diplomacy, Class of '86), who works at Samsung SDS in the U.S., was appointed as president, and alumnus Byeon Im-ju (Dept. of Mathematics, Class of '90), who works at Launchpad AI, was appointed as vice president. Sookmyung Director for External Cooperation Lee Hyeong-jin, who prepared the establishment of the meeting, said, "A day here may be an ordinary day for you, but for some of the students currently enrolled, that day may become the dream of a lifetime," and "I also hope that this meeting will be a meaningful starting point for career development networking not only for the students but also for yourselves."
This meeting was formed with the consensus to create a network of alumni in their 20s to 40s working in Silicon Valley and to become mentors for junior students. As career development is essential and job changes are frequent here, the need for information exchange is increasing, and more active activities are expected. It is also expected to contribute to building an alumni community that encompasses generations by joining forces with the existing overseas alumni association, which is centered on those in their 60s and older.
Sookmyung President Moon requested, "The mission to nurture female science and engineering talent for national development is also linked to the value of women's universities," and "I hope that you, who are the blueprint for talent development and the future, will serve as a lighthouse for students' challenges in Silicon Valley based on your affection for your alma mater."
Meanwhile as part of her visit to Silicon Valley, President Moon, along with Director Lee Hyeong-jin and Sookmyung NorCal Alumni Association President Lee Jae-sun, visited Google to experience the innovative and eco-friendly work environment and culture. Ha Yun-ji (Dept. of English Language and Literature, Class of '03), who works as a UX designer at Google, directly explained the latest Android smartphones.
