During the official visit to Saudi Arabia, President Moon Si Yeun held a meeting on April 15 with Paul Pacifico, CEO of the Saudi Music Commission, and other officials to discuss cultural cooperation based on the Korean Wave (Hallyu), including plans to co-host a K-pop-centered summer camp.
The Saudi Music Commission, a key agency under the Ministry of Culture, is leading efforts to develop and globalize the country’s music industry. By strengthening institutional foundations, fostering collaborations between domestic and international artists, and expanding cultural exchanges, the Commission aims to transform Saudi Arabia into a global hub for music.
A central topic of discussion was the joint development of a customized summer camp focused on K-pop and Korean popular culture. The camp is expected to align with the Saudi government's policy direction of nurturing the next generation of musical talent.
Additionally, our university explored the possibility of connecting with the Saudi government’s scholarship programs to enable Saudi students to participate in both degree programs and cultural education at the university. Further proposals included offering practical music-centered educational programs, and organizing joint forums and conferences to enhance cultural exchange between the two countries. These initiatives are expected to foster greater mutual understanding of each country’s culture and help lay the groundwork for Saudi Arabia’s music industry to expand globally.
Paul Pacifico, who participated in the discussions, was the former CEO of the UK’s Association of Independent Music (AIM). Known for his work with globally renowned artists such as Stevie Wonder, he has played a key role in driving innovation and international exchange within the music industry. With his extensive experience in the global music market and strategic insight, he is recognized as a transformative leader for Saudi Arabia’s music scene.
Our university plans to further strengthen K-Wave partnerships with Saudi Arabia and serve as a cultural bridge between the two countries. President Moon stated, “This discussion marks more than just the start of a summer camp—it’s the beginning of building a sustainable model for cultural cooperation,” adding, “Sookmyung Women’s University will continue to make diverse efforts to promote Hallyu education and cultural exchange.”
