The Vision Declaration Ceremony for the University’s 120th Anniversary was held on Thursday, June 12, at the Snowflake Square Hall on campus. Attendees included President Moon Si-yeun, Kim Kyung-hee, President of the Alumnae Association, as well as faculty, staff, alumnae, and students — representing all members of the Sookmyung community. Former Presidents Han Young-sil and Hwang Sun-hye, former Alumnae Association Presidents Lee Sang-sook and Chung Choon-hee, and Sookmyung Cultural Foundation Chairperson Cho Sun-hye also graced the event with their presence.
Founded in 1906 by the Royal Family of the Korean Empire, Sookmyung Women’s University is the first royal women’s educational institution established by Koreans for Koreans. It marks the beginning of the national education for women in Korea, built by our own efforts without foreign capital or initiatives. The university began as ‘Myungshin Girls’ School’, admitting five female students, and was later elevated to ‘Sookmyung Women’s College’ in 1948. In 1995, it declared the university’s “Second Founding.”
The official slogan for the 120th anniversary is "Proud Sookmyung, Beyond 120." It signifies that the bold wave of women’s education that began at Sookmyung 120 years ago is now expanding into a powerful force aimed at the future.
To realize this vision, the university has formed the 120th Anniversary Commemoration Committee and is pursuing various initiatives.
In particular, the Second Founding Campus will be designated as an Innovation Growth Zone, and the university plans to build a future-ready campus through the expansion of the Science Hall and the Library.
On the day of the vision declaration ceremony, President Moon appointed former Alumnae Association President Chung Choon-hee as Chair of the Sookmyung Development Committee, which operates under the 120th Anniversary Commemoration Committee. During the ceremony, the official logo and symbol mark commemorating the university’s 120th anniversary were also unveiled.
The logo reinterprets the dynamic and progressive wave of Sookmyung’s spirit by transforming its three-dimensional image into a two-dimensional design.
The symbol mark, inspired by a snowflake motif, features a dodecagon (12-sided figure) representing Sookmyung’s 120-year history. It conveys the message of advancing beyond 120 years toward an infinite future.
Since the inauguration of President Moon Si-yeun last September, the university has been promoting innovative, creative education under the slogan "Outthinkers Sookmyung: Challenge for the Future." The initiative aims to break free from conventional ways of thinking and nurture global talents who view the world from new perspectives.
President Moon stated, “If the past 120 years were a history of women overcoming discrimination and proving their independence, the next 120 years will be a journey of forging new paths as a university that connects people and the future.” She added, “We will do our utmost to ensure that our vision becomes a stepping stone—not only for the growth of Sookmyung Women’s University, but also for a better tomorrow for our communities as well as a sustainable future for humanity.”
