Sookmyung Women’s University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with 15 Korean Education Centers located throughout Japan to promote active academic and cultural exchange and nurture future talent, further strengthening educational and cultural cooperation between Korea and Japan.

President Moon Si-Yeun and Prof. Chun Seh-jae, Dean of International Affairs, attended the Korea–Japan Higher Education Conference held in Osaka, Japan, on Saturday, August 30, where the agreement was formally concluded. The event was co-hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Osaka and the Osaka Korean Education Center to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan and the establishment of a new Study Abroad Support Center.

The MOU outlines a range of specific and practical collaboration initiatives, including: 1) joint cultural exchange programs for Japanese students, 2) scholarship programs and special admissions recommendations for outstanding students, 3) mutual institutional visits to support exchanges, training, and study in Korea, 4) promotional activities for studying in Korea, including career and academic counseling, 5) distribution of promotional materials related to studying in Korea.

Notably, directors from eight Korean Education Centers across Japan attended the conference in person, laying the groundwork for expanded cooperation going forward.

Sookmyung Women’s University has a long history of academic collaboration with Japan. Beginning with student exchange programs with Ochanomizu University in 2000 and Konan Women’s University in 2001, Sookmyung now maintains partnerships with 34 universities and research institutions throughout Japan.

The conference also served as a platform for students and university representatives to share their experiences and discuss the achievements of Korea–Japan higher education exchange. The program featured opening remarks by Eo Hyo-jin, Director of the Osaka Korean Education Center; a keynote lecture by Han Sang-shin, President of the National Institute for International Education; a talk session with international students; and an expert presentation by Kim Joong-seop, Distinguished Professor at Sookmyung’s College of Global Convergence.

In her congratulatory remarks, President Moon stated, “Through wide-ranging cooperation in education, research, and culture, Sookmyung Women’s University will continue to strengthen the friendship between Korea and Japan and help lay a foundation for the next generation of both countries to grow together. I hope this conference will mark the starting point for building a more practical and sustainable partnership with Japan.”
