The Dept. of Global Convergence, an international program exclusively for foreign students, held its 2025 Fall Semester Orientation on Thursday, September 18, at the Hansang-eun Lounge in the Centennial Hall, welcoming 117 new students from 11 different countries.

This semester’s incoming class includes 49 students from Mongolia, 25 from Vietnam, 15 from Myanmar, 14 from China, 7 from Nepal, 2 from Japan, and 1 each from Germany, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkey, and Indonesia. The gathering of students from such diverse backgrounds further reinforced the department’s multicultural identity and its vision of global education.

In her welcoming address, President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Sookmyung Women’s University is a cradle for nurturing talented individuals who embody knowledge, creativity, and a global mindset. I hope each of you will grow your dreams here and take bold steps toward the future.” Dean Moon Hyung-nam of the College of Global Convergence emphasized the four core values of pioneering spirit, challenge and innovation, leadership, and vision, encouraging students to “develop creativity and a spirit of challenge in this new environment and grow into global leaders.”

Distinguished Prof. Kim Jung-sup advised, “Your university life, where you learn and share experiences, will deepen and broaden your future,” while Dept. Chair Kim Kyung-ah remarked, “I hope the path you’ve chosen becomes more than just an academic journey — a precious time to discover new dreams and possibilities.”

The event featured congratulatory performances by the university’s cheering squad ‘Nivis’ and a musical team led by Prof. Lee Eun-sun from the Graduate School of Music Therapy. New students also introduced themselves by nationality and exchanged greetings in multiple languages, experiencing Sookmyung’s international atmosphere firsthand. Following this, students participated in a range of programs including academic briefings, curriculum introductions, experience-sharing sessions with senior students, and a quiz event. The orientation concluded with a campus museum tour designed to help new students adjust to university life.

Meanwhile, under President Moon Si-yeun’s leadership, Sookmyung Women’s University has been advancing its vision of becoming a global university at the center of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) and a new model of global education. In line with this vision, the College of Global Convergence will be expanded and reorganized next year into the College of Hallyu (K-Wave) International Studies, introducing the world’s first Hallyu-specialized majors such as K-POP, K-Beauty & Cosmetics, K-Content Production, and K-Food.
