The Sookmyung Legal Clinic, established to provide professional support for members of the university community facing legal issues or disputes, officially opened on Tuesday, September 30. Through this service, students, faculty, and staff can now receive free legal advice from alumnae lawyers on a wide range of matters, including sexual crimes, labor issues, inheritance, and real estate.
The opening ceremony, held in Room 419 of the Jinri Hall, was attended by President Moon Si-yeun, university administrators, faculty members from the College of Law, and about ten alumnae lawyers who will participate as legal advisors.
The Legal Clinic was launched under the initiative of President Moon Si-yeun’s campaign pledge to “provide free legal services on campus” and is operated by the Sookmyung Institute of Legal Studies. Former attorney and professor Sung Min-seop, who retired from the College of Law in 2023, serves as the head of the clinic, working alongside a team of 18 alumnae lawyers.
Students and staff may request consultations by emailing a brief description of their case along with their preferred consultation date. The clinic will then arrange a one-on-one session either in person or online. Anonymous consultations are also available, and all personal information is strictly protected.

Dean Woo Byung-chang of the College of Law stated, “Consultation dates and times will be adjusted according to the number of requests. We will post detailed operational guidelines and procedures on the university website so that all members of the Sookmyung community can easily access the service.”
The Legal Clinic is expected to serve as a vital resource, providing timely legal advice on issues that may arise in academic or everyday life. In the future, the clinic plans to expand its services to local residents, evolving into a new model of university–community cooperation that fosters mutual growth.
