Sookmyung Women’s University visited Mongolia to strengthen its status as an educational hub in Northeast Asia. A delegation led by President Moon Si-yeun and Dean of International Affairs Chun Seh-jae visited Ulaanbaatar on the 9th (local time), where they signed a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with major local educational institutions, opening new pathways for attracting outstanding international students and expanding academic exchange.

In the morning, the SMWU delegation began its schedule with a visit to the Khan-Mongol School. This prestigious private school specializes in preparing students for study in Korea, with approximately 85% of its graduates going on to Korean universities. SMWU not only signed an institutional agreement with the school but also held an on-site admissions briefing for local students. A university official explained, “This is significant in that it establishes a direct foothold for proactively identifying and recruiting talented Mongolian students who aspire to study in Korea.”

In the afternoon, the delegation visited Mongolian National University, one of the country’s top-tier private universities. Through discussions held that day, the two institutions explored comprehensive cooperation measures—including exchange programs for sending and receiving students, the promotion of joint research projects, and the organization of academic seminars—and signed a related agreement. Through this partnership, the two universities plan to invigorate mutual visits by researchers and students, thereby enhancing academic synergy.
Mongolia is a “young nation,” with approximately 60% of its population under the age of 30, and has recently shown a strong enthusiasm for higher education as it pursues industrial diversification and economic growth. In particular, the country is accelerating its transition to a knowledge-based society, centered on the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.
Mongolian students rank Korea as one of their most preferred destinations for overseas study, making Korea’s role in Mongolia’s higher education landscape especially significant. At present, Korea is the country with the second-largest number of Mongolian international students, and educational cooperation between the two nations has emerged as a key partnership for national development.

This agreement is therefore viewed as a strategic move by Sookmyung to attract talented Mongolian students and deepen the quality of higher education exchange between the two countries. President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Mongolia is a young and dynamic country with great enthusiasm for higher education and strong growth potential,” adding, “Building on this visit, Sookmyung Women’s University will continue to expand educational and research cooperation so that it can become a ‘place of hope’ where outstanding Mongolian talents can realize their dreams.”
