Sookmyung Women’s University is set to promote joint research and academic exchange in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with Griffith University, a research-intensive Australian institution ranked within the top 2% of universities worldwide.

During an official visit to Australia, Sookmyung’s delegation visited Griffith University’s Nathan Campus on February 11 (Wed), where the two institutions discussed avenues for academic cooperation and the direction of a forthcoming agreement. Griffith University has consistently ranked among the top 2% of universities globally and placed 255th in the QS World University Rankings 2025.

The meeting was organized to expand Sookmyung’s global research network celebrating its 120th anniversary and to generate tangible outcomes in AI, a sector considered a key future industry.

The two universities agreed to: △pursue joint research in AI △promote exchanges between academic departments and research centers △activate student and faculty exchange programs. They selected satellite imagery AI library systems and AI-based mental healthcare technologies as core research themes and decided to carry out joint projects in these areas.

The collaboration will be led by Prof. Kim Byung-gyu of Sookmyung’s Division of Artificial Intelligence Engineering and his Intelligent Vision Processing Lab, working together with leading research centers at Griffith University. The partnership is expected to contribute to the establishment of a “Global R&D Hub” dedicated to nurturing female talent and AI experts representing both countries.

Department-level exchanges will also be significantly expanded. The two institutions plan to implement cooperative channels such as lecture and seminar exchanges and short-term training programs, broadening students’ international field experience while increasing opportunities for faculty-led global joint research.

President Moon Si-yeun stated, “This collaboration will serve as an important turning point for Sookmyung Women’s University as it advances toward becoming a global hub for AI education and research. We will actively support efforts to create synergy between the outstanding research infrastructure and human resources of both institutions.”

Meanwhile, Sookmyung’s delegation plans to continue visiting major universities and institutions in Sydney and the Gold Coast through the 17th to further expand its global partnerships.
