Sookmyung Women’s University visited The University of Queensland (UQ), a globally renowned institution representing the state of Queensland, Australia, as well as the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Brisbane on February 12 (Thu). The visit aimed to promote joint research in the bio sector and expand overseas internship opportunities for enrolled students.
During its official visit to Australia, Sookmyung’s delegation toured the UQ campus and discussed measures to strengthen academic and research collaboration between the two universities. Founded in 1909, UQ is the first and largest university in Queensland and is recognized as a leading global research institution. It ranked 42nd in the QS World University Rankings and 80th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The delegation introduced the outstanding research capabilities of Sookmyung’s Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research Institute of Women’s Health. UQ expressed strong interest in the university’s expertise in women’s diseases and pharmaceutical research. Both institutions confirmed the potential for collaboration in the bio and health sectors and agreed to pursue concrete joint research initiatives in the future.
In addition, the two universities discussed expanding student education programs. They agreed to initiate exchanges by dispatching a “Global Exploration Team” composed of Sookmyung students and by activating short-term English language training programs, with plans to gradually broaden the scope of cooperation.

On the same day, the delegation visited the Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Brisbane to explore ways to enhance students’ global career development. Discussions focused particularly on expanding internship programs with leading local companies.
Currently, the total volume of imports and exports between Korea and the Queensland–Brisbane–Gold Coast region amounts to approximately AUD 21 billion (about KRW 21.5 trillion), ranking second after China. A total of 21 Korean companies—including Korea Gas Corporation, LG Energy Solution, and Lotte International—have entered the Queensland market. Sookmyung plans to cooperate with local diplomatic offices to create high-quality internship opportunities that will help students gain practical work experience.
President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Cooperation with UQ, which possesses world-class research capabilities, presents an important opportunity for our university’s bio and women’s health research to advance to a global level. At the same time, we will fully leverage Queensland’s economic strengths so that our students can expand their careers on a broader stage through local employment and internship opportunities.”
