Sookmyung Women’s University has been selected for the second consecutive year as an “Excellent Certified University,” the highest rating in the International Education Quality Assurance System (IES) evaluation, jointly administered by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
Since 2012, the Ministry of Education has conducted annual evaluations of universities’ internationalization capacity, designating institutions with outstanding international student management performance and strong global infrastructure as Excellent Certified Universities. This year, 39 universities nationwide—including Sookmyung—were selected.
By earning Excellent Certified status again this year, following last year’s recognition, Sookmyung has once more received official acknowledgment of its world-class global education environment.
Universities selected as Excellent Certified institutions receive various benefits, including simplified documentation and exemption from visa screening for international student visa issuance, additional points in the government scholarship program (GKS), and preferential promotion by the Ministry of Education at overseas study-abroad expos. These advantages are expected to strengthen Sookmyung’s competitiveness in attracting international students and to further solidify its stable management system.
Led by its Office of International Affairs, Sookmyung has advanced its admissions processes for international undergraduate and graduate applicants and operated tailored adaptation support programs for students enrolled in its language institute. To enhance students’ academic capabilities, the university has continuously expanded Korean language proficiency programs, including level-based Korean courses, special TOPIK preparation classes, and Korean language clinics linked to major courses. In addition, tutoring systems and academic support programs have been implemented to help students adjust to major coursework and prevent academic dropout.
The university has also strengthened support systems to ensure stable living conditions and psychological adjustment. Dedicated advisors for international students provide ongoing counseling in areas such as academics, daily life, residency status, visas, and career planning. Global mentoring and buddy programs connecting domestic and international students, along with cultural experience activities, further promote engagement and exchange on campus.
This systematic internationalization management framework has resulted in a low rate of illegal residency and stable academic administration outcomes, ultimately leading to improved international student satisfaction and the achievement of Excellent Certified status for two consecutive years.
Chun Seh-jae, Dean of the Office of International Affairs at Sookmyung, stated, “This selection demonstrates that Sookmyung’s internationalization capacity ranks among the very top nationwide. We will continue to establish ourselves as a preferred university for global talent based on our enhanced educational model.”
