Sookmyung Welcomes Delegation from Fu Jen Catholic University of Taiwan

On Wednesday, May 13, Sookmyung Women’s University signed an exchange agreement with a delegation from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. Through this agreement, the two institutions plan to promote student exchanges and continue academic cooperation focused on education and psychological counseling.
The signing ceremony, held at the university’s Administration Building, was attended by representatives from Fu Jen Catholic University, including President Francis Yi-Chen Lan (藍易振), Dean of Student Affairs Cheng Cheng-Liang (鄭丞良), and Director of the Student Counseling Center Huang Chien (黃健). Representing Sookmyung Women’s University were President Moon Si-yeun, Vice President Wee Kyung-woo, Dean of the Graduate School of Education Cho Nam-ki, Dean of International Affairs Chun Seh-jae, Director of the Sookmyung Happiness Counseling Center Choi Han-na, and Director of the Teacher Training Center Choi In-hee.
Founded in 1925, Fu Jen Catholic University is the only Catholic comprehensive university in Taiwan. The agreement focuses on expanding exchanges in the fields of education and psychological counseling, areas in which both institutions have strong expertise. In line with this direction, participants also included counseling psychologists He Guan-ying (何冠瑩) and Kim Wen-zhu (金汶珠), as well as coordinator Hsu Ya-chi (徐雅琪) from Fu Jen Catholic University. From Sookmyung Women’s University, attendees included Prof. Choi Seo-yoon and Prof. Son Seung-hee from the Counseling Education program of the Graduate School of Education; Prof. Park Ga-na from the Social Studies Education program; Prof. Joo Hee-sun from the Music Education program; Prof. Kim Yoo-mi from the Early Childhood Education program; Prof. Yang Jung-moo from the Art Education program; and Special Prof. Choi Eun-young from the Sookmyung Happiness Counseling Center.

Following the signing ceremony, the Sookmyung Happiness Counseling Center and the Graduate School of Education jointly hosted an academic seminar on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) under the theme, “Education Beyond Knowledge!” The program highlighted the essence of learning and the importance of social and emotional education for student growth, while also discussing key competencies needed in the digital era.

During the Sookmyung session, Prof. Choi Seo-yoon (Counseling Education, Graduate School of Education) delivered a presentation titled “Social and Emotional Learning in Teacher Training Programs.” She emphasized the growing importance of emotional competence and empathy in future educational environments and discussed the significance and direction of incorporating SEL into pre-service teacher education.
Next, Prof. Choi Han-na, Director of the Sookmyung Happiness Counseling Center, introduced the “Sookmyung Happiness Counseling Center Social and Emotional Competency Program.” She presented a university-level SEL practice model designed to support students’ emotional stability and healthy campus life.
In the Fu Jen Catholic University session, Director Huang Chien of the Student Counseling Center gave a presentation titled “Cultivating Core Social and Emotional Competencies to Respond to the Challenges of the Digital Era.” He analyzed the psychological changes and challenges students face amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and digital environments, and explained the importance of developing core social and emotional competencies to overcome them.
The Sookmyung Happiness Counseling Center and the Graduate School of Education plan to continue academic exchanges with Fu Jen Catholic University in the fields of counseling and social-emotional education, with the goal of shaping the future direction of education and driving educational innovation for the qualitative growth of teacher training.
President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Through this agreement, we hope the two universities will establish a close cooperative relationship across education and research, and expand meaningful exchanges that support students’ growth and strengthen their global competencies.”
