More than 300 students, faculty, and staff from Sookmyung Women’s University attended Sookmyung Women’s University Day at the Kiwoom Heroes home baseball game held on May 19 at Gocheok Sky Dome.
Students embraced the festive atmosphere by wearing commemorative Kiwoom Heroes × Sookmyung Women’s University cooling towels as headbands or fashion accessories. Snack coupons provided by the university helped fuel their ballpark experience, with the stadium’s famous cream shrimp proving especially popular.

Before the game, the university cheerleading squad “Nivis” energized the crowd with a lively performance, while the “Narsha Choir,” a leadership group from Sookmyung’s College of Music, sang the Korean national anthem. President Moon Si-yeun threw the ceremonial first pitch, and a Sookmyung student mascot, Snowy (Noonsongi), took the ceremonial first swing. Lee Jun, great-grandson of Emperor Gojong, also attended the event as a special guest.

In her remarks, President Moon introduced Sookmyung Women’s University as “an institution founded by the Imperial Korean Royal Family with the noble mission of saving and strengthening the nation.” Comparing Sookmyung students to the “Heroes,” the symbol of the Kiwoom Heroes baseball club, she added, “Building on the heritage of the past 120 years, we will continue to nurture many women heroes for the future.”

The game quickly developed into an offensive showdown, with the Kiwoom Heroes and the SSG Landers repeatedly exchanging leads. Kiwoom tied the game with a hit by Choi Joo-hwan during a bases-loaded opportunity and then added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead.
Regardless of which team’s jersey they wore, students enthusiastically joined in singing the Kiwoom Heroes’ fight songs and cheers throughout the game. During the mid-game break, a special quiz commemorating Sookmyung’s 120th anniversary was held, while “MAX,” the university’s street dance club, performed Wanna One’s “Burn It Up” from the cheer platform.

Kim Hyun-soo, a Data Science major from the Class of 2024 who attended the game with her parents, said, “It is meaningful to celebrate the university’s 120th anniversary through a variety of events. I’m proud to be able to show my parents the energy and spirit of the Sookmyung community.”
The highlight of the evening came in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the score tied, Kiwoom’s Kim Woong-bin launched a walk-off home run, sending students to their feet. They embraced one another and erupted in cheers as the ball sailed over the fence. Kim Tae-yu, a Mathematics major from the Class of 2026 and a longtime Kiwoom Heroes fan, said, “I’ve been supporting Kiwoom for four or five years, and now I finally got to watch a game in person as a Sookmyung student. Winning on a walk-off home run made it even more exciting.”
The Kiwoom Heroes defeated the SSG Landers 7–6, extending their winning streak to two games. The Sookmyung community, who jokingly earned the title of “victory fairies” for bringing good luck to the team, ended the evening by singing the popular cheer song “Apartment” in unison and enjoying a memorable night of celebration and camaraderie.
