Under the bright blue sky of May, international students from 16 countries gathered at the “Haebang Tower Sookmyung International House” for a pizza party.
In the afternoon of May 23 (Thu.), the Student Living House held the “Happy Pizza Day” event at Haebang Tower of the International House in Yongsan-dong 2-ga.
Around 70 international students from 16 countries around the world had pizza on the terrace outside and made friends with one another through talent shows in groups of their countries. Faculty members including President Yunkeum Chang, Vice President Jongseong Park, International Affairs Bureau Head Sejae Chun, External Affairs Bureau Head Gieun Jeong, and Student Affairs Bureau Head Yunsun Song also participated in the event to spend priceless time with the students.
“We prepared a special event to celebrate the opening of the International House Haebang Tower, which now sits at the foot of Namsan Mountain. We hope the students share earnest conversations about their life on campus and in their dormitories and mingle together to feel the pride and warmth of fellow Sookmyung members,” the Student Living House stated.
Happy Pizza Day began with a beautiful violin piece congratulating the event, followed by President Jang’s welcome speech and an address from Anjiyeka, an Indonesian student. “I love the dormitory because it is close to places such as Itaewon, Myeong-dong, and Banpo. It is also convenient at night because the building has a cafe on the fifth floor,” said Anjiyeka, who joined the event as the student representative.
The talent shows from each country followed, which added thrill to the event with a traditional dance performance by Brunei students and a traditional song by Chinese students. Meanwhile, students from Kazakhstan and Myanmar showcased K-pop dance tracks from groups such as BTS, New Jeans, and BLACKPINK, drawing vigorous applause from the crowd.
President Jang and other faculty members congratulated each participant and gave complimentary stickers to show their appreciation and encouragement, vowing to support the participants in continuing their happy international school lives.
Having opened in February this year, Haebang Tower of Sookmyung Women’s University was built for international students to replace the existing International House. Around 170 international students reside in the facility as of the first semester of 2024.
