Students from Sookmyung Women's University will immerse themselves in the cutting-edge bio-health industry through a two-week program at Harvard, MIT, and other top U.S. universities.
The "2024 Sookmyung X Harvard Global Program Launching Ceremony" took place in the afternoon of July 9 at the campus administration building, organized by the university's LINC3.0 project group. Fifteen students majoring in Biology, Pharmacy, and Advanced Engineering, along with President Yunkeum Chang, LINC3.0 Project Director Jungsan Oh, and Division Director Changkyu Yoon, attended the ceremony.
During the event, students outlined their plans and goals for the program in group presentations. "I plan to learn about the latest technologies and research trends in the bio field, which will help me clarify my career path and develop a concrete roadmap for my future studies and research," said Hanbi Park (21, Mechanical Systems major).
From July 13 to July 28, the students will travel to the east coast of the United States, where they will visit renowned institutions including Harvard and MIT. They will engage in top-tier bio-health education, participate in tours, and network with experts in the field to forge their own career paths.
The itinerary also includes a visit to the Broad Institute, a leading genome research center co-founded by Harvard and MIT, as well as the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC), a hub for innovative startups. Additionally, they will attend a seminar focused on entrepreneurship leadership for female scientists.
President Yunkeum Chang emphasized the value of this unique opportunity, stating, "Experiencing advanced programs at Harvard and MIT firsthand is an unparalleled experience. Make the most of this precious time, treating each day as a chance to pursue your dreams.”
This initiative is part of the Ministry of Education's LINC3.0 project (Third-Stage fostering project for leading universities of Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation), which Sookmyung Women's University has been involved in since last year. The project aims to foster the core talents in emerging industries by integrating the "Advanced Materials and Bio Convergence Major,"' a student-designed major, with the program. The program's continued operation with elite international universities is expected to enhance the university's global competitiveness.
Additionally, leading Korean apparel brands Youngone Corporation and Youngone Outdoor have committed to funding part of the students' educational expenses. The two companies have previously supported Sookmyung Women's University, donating KRW 1 billion to foster future global talents through industry-academia-research initiatives, continuing their consistent cooperative relationship with the university.
